Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time is already the 9th most successful

While it looked like Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time would not reap further achievements as its earnings rate slowed further, the film shattered expectations by taking a tremendous leap and becoming the ninth highest grossing anime film in the world. Japanese film history, beating out the 2019 film, Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire.


The film has accumulated 9.57 billion yen (more than 87.22 million dollars) accumulated at the box office through more than 6.26 million tickets sold. This makes it definitely the ninth most successful anime film ever, now trailing Studio Ghibli produced Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) at 12.02 billion yen.

The film opened in Japanese theaters on March 8 and became the most successful film for both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Hideaki Anno. To date it has not been released outside of Japan, and on June 11 Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.01 Thrice Upon a Time was released. The new version contains “minor revisions” to some animation sequences, but does not change the story of the film.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Synopsis

In 2015, the world is on the brink of destruction. The last hope of humanity resides in the hands of NERV, a special agency under the command of the United Nations, and its Evangelions, giant robots capable of defeating the Angels who announce the ruin of the Earth. Gendou Ikari, head of the organization, is looking for compatible pilots who can synchronize with the Evangelions and unleash their true potential.

Aiding in this defensive effort are talented strategist Misato Katsuragi, head of Tactical Operations, and Ritsuko Akagi, chief scientist. Face to face with his father for the first time in years, the life of the 14-year-old boy, Shinji Ikari, has to change irreversibly when he is brought to the NERV facilities and discovers his heartbreaking destiny: he must become the pilot of the Evangelion Unit. -01 with the fate of humanity in his hands.
