The Dolle Mol café and bar in Brussels, famous for being frequented by anarchists, has started accepting payments in cryptocurrencies. Located on Rue des Éperonniers street in the center of the Belgian capital, the bar has become one of the first establishments of its kind, within Belgium, to admit bitcoin as a payment option for its beers and other drinks it offers.
The bar, which has been renovated in recent years, is run by a group of young people. Commenting on the decision to allow payment with digital currencies, its owners explained that:
Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin are the money of the future. We want to give everyone the opportunity to buy a pint with this “new” payment method.
“If you want to pay for a pint with, for example, bitcoin, you can easily do so with a QR code. The money will go into our personal bank account, and the customer will have their beer without touching cash or using a credit / debit Card.” explained one of the owners.
The criptopagos are not yet regulated in the EU. Last year, the European Commission adopted a package of measures on digital finance that will determine the future of the European fintech sector. Part of that package is a new legislative proposal called Mercados de Criptoactivos that aims to introduce standards for digital currencies and crypto service providers.
