‘Fantastic beasts’: Mads Mikkelsen, probable replacement for Johnny Depp

Director David Yates woos 'Hannibal' and 'Rogue One' actor as his new Grindelwald

From cannibal psychiatrist to dark magician: that could be Mads Mikkelsen’s trajectory for the foreseeable future. According to Deadline, director David Yates wants the Hannibal and Rogue One actor as a replacement for Johnny Depp in the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts franchise.

Depp, who until now played the dark magician Gellert Grindelwald, was fired by Warner after losing a libel suit against the British tabloid The Sun, which had called him a “batterer”. The studio’s decision will not only make the actor go to collect his full salary after having shot a single scene in the film, but also forces him to find a new face for a character whose presence in Fantastic Beasts 3 was going to be more important than never.

If Yates can get Mikkelsen to join the film, he will take one of today’s most charismatic actors… and one of the least exploited by Hollywood. Although the Danish’s roles in movies (Casino Royale, Pusher) and series (Hannibal) have earned him a just fame, other productions such as Rogue One or the marvel Doctor Strange gave him roles far below his talent. Will his battle against Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law be the first chance to see him at full throttle in a blockbuster?

For the moment, Fantastic Beasts 3 continues its filming in Great Britain, with a release date scheduled for the summer of 2022.
