The second wave of the coronavirus is being particularly devastating in Europe, with several governments deciding to implement a new lockdown. This is how Boris Johnson decided in the United Kingdom (still managing the filming of The Batman to continue its course) and this has also been done in Germany, subjected to partial confinement since last November 2. Cinemas, bars and restaurants are closed, and meetings can only exceed a certain number of attendees if the authorities approve each specific case.
Matrix 4, directed by Lana Wachowski, was being filmed in the German country, and right at the end of the process the filming process has been part of a serious controversy. According to the German newspaper Bild and media such as The Guardian have echoed, the film team celebrated the conclusion of filming with a party that has skipped the anti-COVID-19 protocols. On the pretext, to be exact, that they were actually shooting a scene. One of celebration.
The event took place on November 11 at the Babelsberg studios in Potsdam, half an hour from Berlin, and was attended by 200 people including Lana and Lily Wachowski, Keanu Reeves and his girlfriend, Alexandra Grant. The party consisted of fireworks, dance shows, music from DJs, tattoo caravans and various free bars of sushi, wine, sake and desserts.
A luxury that, apparently, could be developed thanks to a trick of the film crew, which set a “celebration scene” for the end of it, even having a code name to refer to it: “ice cream team event ”. The cover, however, seemed to fall apart when one of the attendees reported to the German media.
The source has not been identified, but reveals that “according to the program, it was deliberately going to take place on the last day of filming. It was a party scene, and the necessary hygiene measures were taken ”. For the development of the same, the informant assures that “all had a PCR before attending and wore masks, but as time passed many were taking them off”.
According to this same source, despite what was indicated in the calendar, nothing was shot, moreover the authorities were notified that this gathering of people was going to take place. Health has already undertaken an investigation, and the only explanations that have been given on the matter have come from Bianca Markarewicz, spokesperson for the Babelsberg studies.
Seemingly sheltering himself in the Warner Bros. version, Markarewicz persists in defending that it was the shooting of a party, not a party itself, also corresponding to a scene that had begun to be worked in summer. The study, for its part, endorses Markarewicz’s version and there have been no further statements.
In addition to Keanu Reeves, Matrix 4 will mean the return of Carrie-Anne Moss and Jada Pinkett Smith to the franchise, having signed many other actors including Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff and Priyanka Chopra. Its premiere is scheduled for Christmas 2021.
