HUNTER x HUNTER manga surpasses 79 million copies in circulation

A press release confirmed that the manga written and polished by Yoshihiro Togashi, HUNTER x HUNTER, has exceeded 79 million cumulative copies in circulation. The count includes the thirty-six compilation volumes published to date, with the most recent released on October 4, 2018 in Japan, as well as all spin-off works and novelizations made.

The statement also confirmed that the multimedia franchise will have a collaboration with the amusement park Universal Studios Japan, which will begin on March 4, 2022 at the facilities in Japan. This will be the park’s first collaboration with this particular franchise. The release also included a special visual for this collaboration.

Togashi began publishing the manga in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump from the publisher Shueisha in March 1998 and the publisher published the thirty-sixth compiled volume in October 2018 in Japan. The work has been on hiatus since November 2018 (which is in fact only his current and longest hiatus, since he had already been on multiple pauses previously), due to the author’s health concerns.

The play inspired a first sixty-two episode anime adaptation produced by the studios. Nippon Animation and released in October 1999 in Japan. It later inspired a second 140-episode anime adaptation produced by the studios. Madhouse and released in October 2011 in Japan. Since this latest adaptation adapted 339 chapters from the original manga (that is, 86% of the 390 published), there is not enough material to produce a second season, and the remaining material is not “interesting enough”, according to fans such as to inspire a feature film.

HUNTER x HUNTER is set in a world where hunters exist to perform all kinds of dangerous tasks, such as capturing criminals and valiantly searching for lost treasures in unexplored territories. Twelve-year-old Gon Freecss is determined to become the best hunter possible in hopes of finding his father, who was a hunter and abandoned his family long ago. They will meet a host of monsters, creatures, and characters, all while learning what it really means to be a hunter.
