WhatsApp: What does the old man emoji mean?

Have you ever used or been sent the old man emoji from WhatsApp?

Here we tell you its meaning and its characteristics.

The arrival of emojis to the digital world has made it easier for users to express their feelings in conversations on WhatsApp and other platforms. They are generally divided into six categories including yellow faces, food, animals, weather conditions, numbers, and symbols.

Currently, it is very common to replace words or phrases with an emoji that expresses exactly what you want to say. WhatsApp has made its catalog of emojis available to everyone, which makes clear their real meaning, be it happiness, sadness, dream, anger, disappointment, among others, but there are some more whose interpretation is subject to different cultural contexts depending on the environment of the person using them.

Today we have to talk about the old man emoji of WhatsApp, which has two variations, both male and female. It received the name of ‘Older Person’, older adult in Spanish, being approved as part of Unicode 10.0 in 2017 and added to Emoji 5.0 in 2017.

This emoticon is a representation of an elderly person, who looks like a typical grandfather with a nearly hairless head, wrinkles, and glasses. It can be applied in any context related to older men, for example, in messages referring to their grandfather, another older relative and anyone else they know as neighbors, teachers, among others.

Users can still use this emoticon as a joke, when a person has a birthday and is growing up, they can send this emoji to disguise the phrase “you are getting old.” Anyway, we will all reach that age at some point, it is up to us to accept it, although for good news, who doesn’t love grandparents?

It is important to mention that, despite having the same Unicode coding, each platform can vary the design of each emoji to adapt to its operating system or interface. On many occasions this generates a great difference in the interpretation of the same symbol.
